OSINT Series … Part-1
What is OSINT ?
OSINT is intelligence “drawn from publicly available material”, according to the CIA. Most intelligence experts extend that definition to mean information intended for public consumption. The CIA says that OSINT includes information gathered from the internet, mass media, specialist journals and research, photos, and geospatial information. Most of these sources were used in the Bellingcat MH17 investigation.
OSINT does not require its exponents to hack into systems or use private credentials to access data. Viewing someone’s public profile on social media is OSINT; using their login details to unearth private information is not. In intelligence agency terms, OSINT is also information drawn from non-classified sources.
OSINT is information that can be accessed without specialist skills or tools, although it can include sources only available to subscribers, such as newspaper content behind a paywall, or subscription journals
Hey guys after a long break. I came back again with some interesting topics. Today we would see about Open-source intelligence (OSINT). I don’t know how many parts I would make since the topic is vast. So I will start off with different types of maps that can be used for OSINT.
Zoom Earth shows live weather satellite images of the Earth in a fast, zoomable map. Explore near real-time weather images, rainfall radar maps, and animated wind maps. Track tropical cyclones, severe storms, wildfires, natural hazards.
2. Dual maps
Dual maps combine Google Maps, BirdsEye Imagery, and Google Street View into one embeddable control. Dual Maps are free to use. No registration is required. Many customization options are available. Dual Maps combine synchronized Google Maps, Aerial Imagery, and Google Street View into one embeddable control
3. Google Earth Pro (Desktop version)
Google Earth Pro on the desktop is free for users with advanced feature needs. Import and export GIS data, and go back in time with historical imagery. The most exciting feature of google earth is that you can see images back in time just like the Wayback machine has where we can see URLs. This application is available on PC, Mac, or Linux.
4. Sentinal-hub
In Sentinal-hub You can have satellite data (Sentinels, Landsat, and other providers) easily accessible for you to be browsed or analyzed, within our cloud GIS or within your own environment. This app has a lot of snap shorts of live imagery more than google earth pro. The only disadvantage of this map is that the clarity of the image is not proper when you zoom in too much. But you can use tools to de-pixel the image
5. Pic2Map
Pic2Map is an online EXIF data viewer with GPS support that allows you to locate and view your photos on a map. Our system utilizes EXIF data which is available in almost all photos taken with digital cameras, smartphones, and tablets.
If the recording device has a built-in GPS receiver and geotagging was enabled; it is also possible to extract the coordinates where the image was taken. This data includes but is not limited to latitude, longitude, altitude, and direction information. Pic2Map photo mapper will analyze all this information to pinpoint the location on the map and reverse geocode the coordinates to a detailed address if possible.
I hope you guys learned something from free open source tools. It would be better if you keep on exploring more and more of these since they are large to explore . I will keep on updating if I come across any free open-source maps like this. Please let me know if you know any maps which contains different features from the above mentioned
Thank you
